Workflows

Gears working together
Productivity: the rate at which goods or services are produced usually measured in output per unit of labor.

When businesses improve productivity, they improve their bottom line by producing the same amount of output with less work. To improve productivity, businesses can implement workflows—series of steps to accomplish specific tasks—and then automate much of these workflows to minimize labor costs. Efficient workflows can also improve accuracy and the quality of work produced.

For example, a law office might have the following workflow implemented when receiving a return of service on a defendant:

  1. Enter the date of service in FileMaker Pro;
  2. Create a new all-day event in iCal marking the deadline for the defendant to file a responsive pleading;
  3. Draft a letter in Microsoft Word notifying the client of the date of service and the date the responsive pleading is due; and
  4. Email the letter to the client using Mail;

Without automation, these tasks could easily take 10 minutes every time the law office receives a return of service. With automation, these tasks could be completed in seconds.
